Remembering Kay Clinard
UCA President, 2005 – 2019
It is with great sadness to report the passing of Kay Nelson Clinard (May 8, 1942 – December 21, 2025), UCA’s original founder and long-time leader of the UCA International Users Group. Kay was a visionary in the utility standards community, championing cooperation, open standards, and interoperability long before they were widely recognized as essential for the modern grid.
Under Kay’s guidance, UCAIug became a cornerstone of the global standards ecosystem, helping to shape what would become IEC 61850, a foundational technology that continues to advance utility communications and system integration.
Kay’s passion, leadership, and belief in collaboration brought utilities, vendors, and researchers together to solve hard problems and build a more interoperable, reliable, and efficient industry. We are forever grateful for his lifelong dedication, and his influence will be felt for generations to come.
Thank you, Kay!
